Anca Benera + Arnold Estefan

 The Shape of Things to Come

 

Plecând de la istoria satelitului Astra 1A, lansat pe orbită în 1989, Anca Benera și Arnold Estefan au creat un moment performativ, The Shape of Things to Come, folosindu-se de propriul corp și de mijloace de comunicare și supraveghere prin satelit, prin intermediul cărora imaginile cu Revoluția din România făceau înconjurul lumii.

Momentul apariției în Europa a televiziunii prin satelit marchează simbolic și trecerea fostului bloc socialist la sistemul capitalist. Retragerea satelitului Astra1A a coincis cu anul intrării României în NATO, dar și cu apariția fenomenului self-broadcasting. Artiștii investighează evoluția arhivării media și rolul ei în acțiunile de protest din ultimii douăzeci și cinci de ani, făcând vizibilă, totodată, capacitatea de supraveghere a unui instrument de control.

Traseul configurat de artiști prin deplasarea în oraș a fost redat prin intermediul unei aplicații și proiectat în timp real pe un ecran amplasat la punctele noastre de întâlnire pe durata proiectului.

Starting with the history of the Astra 1A satellite, launched into orbit in 1989, Anca Benera & Arnold Estefan created The Shape of Things to Come, a performative intervention using their bodies together with systems of communication and surveillance, which also broadcasted images from the Revolution in Romania.

The introduction of satellite television technology in Europe also symbolically marks the transition of the former Communist states into a capitalist system. The de-activation of the satellite coincided with Romania joining NATO, as well as the contemporary phenomenon of self-broadcasting.

For their project, the artists mapped out a walking route in the city which was tracked using an app and streamed live at our meeting points in both cities. As they walked through the streets, their tracked movements on the virtual map spelled out the words “Things to Come,” part of the title of a novel by George Orwell which describes a dystopian post-revolutionary society.
